Hawaii is a long distance away, but events there in December, 1941 profoundly affected Council Bluffs as well as the rest of the world. High school senior Emily Newby will present her project from National History Day, which involved selecting a veteran from Council Bluffs who died in World War II and is interred in Hawaii. Her project earned her a trip to the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu. Historian Troy Stolp will add comments about the macro-picture of the Pacific Theater of the war and Richard Warner from the Historical Society and Preserve Council Bluffs will describe the impact of the war on life in the metro. This program is free and open to the public.
