UNfortunately, this event has already occurred.
Take in the beauty of the annual Perseid Meteor Shower and explore the wonders to be found in the night sky at Hitchcock Nature Center!
On August 10th, the park will stay open until midnight so visitors can view the night sky away from city lights. Please note: the park will stay open until midnight, but no vehicles will be permitted into the park after 10 p.m. Visitors are welcome to bring lawn chairs, blankets, binoculars, and telescopes to view nature's fireworks from the park's trail system. The Omaha Astronomical Society will be present with telescopes to help you get a close-up look at the moon and other celestial bodies.
$5 per vehicle entry fee (cash or check) or Pottawattamie Conservation Foundation membership.
Some rules and considerations:
- Vehicles will be permitted into the park, spaces permitting, until 10:00 p.m.
- Vehicles must exit the park by 12:00 a.m.
- Visitors are free to lay out blankets and chairs and enjoy the meteor shower from the park's trail system but be mindful of hike time to be out of the park by midnight.
- Please use red light flashlights as they are non-glaring and make nighttime viewing easier for you and those around you.
- Please pay attention to your surroundings as you navigate the steep and hilly Loess Hills after dark.
For additional information please call 712-328-5835.
Please note that this event is extremely dependent on the weather & cloud cover. Seeing meteors is not guaranteed. Any cancellations or changes to the event will be posted to the Pottawattamie Conservation website & the Hitchcock Nature Center Facebook page. We highly recommend checking either of these locations for any event updates prior to heading out for the evening. Thank you!
